Tertiary Japanese Language Speech Contest

cup new

Prizewinners will be notified in mid-August and prize giving details will be posted soon.

The contest aims to encourage learners who are studying Japanese to showcase their language skills in a challenging context. The first prize is a return air ticket to Japan.

The subject, content and form of the speeches are left open to each contestant who will be required to make a 4.5 – 5 minute speech plus time for two questions and replies. The speech must be digitally video-recorded with an audience of at least 10 people and uploaded to a YouTube account specifically set up for the contest.

Further enquiries may be addressed to:

Masayoshi Ogino PhD
Lecturer in Japanese
Department of Global, Cultural and Language Studies
School of International, Social and Political Sciences
University of Canterbury

Some questions that have been asked already:

(1) Video format
MP4 is a desirable format. When you upload the video to Youtube, please ensure that you change the Privacy settings to 'Unlisted' and save it. If you don't do this anyone will be able to watch it.

(2) Focus of video capture
Please include the upper half of the body of the speaker.
Ensure that the speaker's voice is clearly recorded.
The performance of the 2013 winners in the Japanese Language Speech Contest (Japan Foundation, Sydney) will be helpful to get an idea of the focus of video capture.
(3) The instructor
The instructor does not need to be in the video when he/she ask questions.
However, they should be clearly recorded.
Watch http://speechcontest.jpf-sydney.net/result.html to find out what kind of questions need to be asked.
(4) Topic

The subject, content and form of the speeches are left open to each contestant.

Again, the list of titles from the JP Speech Contest 2013 will be helpful.
